Frequently Asked Questions: Botox and Dysport
What is Botox?
The term “Botox” is actually a brand name for a class of products called neuromodulators, which also includes Dysport®. They are purified proteins derived from the botulinum toxin, meaning they are essentially a refined version of a naturally occurring protein. These products can be used cosmetically to temporarily “relax” targeted muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
How do neuromodulators work?
Neuromodulators temporarily inhibit the nerve signals to specific muscles, preventing them from contracting. In turn, the muscles cannot contract as hard. This can soften existing wrinkles and prevents new lines from forming due to repetitive movements.
How long do the results last?
Results typically last 3–4 months, depending on the product used, the area treated, and individual factors such as metabolism.
How soon will I see results?
Results typically start to appear within 3–7 days after treatment, with full effects visible in about two weeks. Results vary on individual factors such as anatomy.
Can neuromodulators be used preventatively?
Yes, starting neuromodulator treatments in your 20s or 30s can help prevent the formation of dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle movements.
Is the procedure painful?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort, often described as a small pinch as very fine needles are typically utilized. The procedure itself is quick, lasting about 5–15 minutes depending on areas treated.
Is there downtime after neuromodulator treatments?
There is no significant downtime. Patients can resume most normal activities immediately but should avoid strenuous exercise, pressure to the area and heat for up to 24 hours.
What are the side effects of neuromodulators?
Common side effects include mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site. Rarely, patients may experience headaches, flu-like symptoms, or diffusion of the product to other unwanted muscles. Side effects can occur depending on following pre and post care instructions. Ask your provider for more information.
Will neuromodulators make me look frozen?
When administered by an experienced professional, neuromodulators create a natural-looking effect, softening wrinkles without affecting your ability to express emotions. Anatomy is always considered for dosing and placement of the product.
Who should avoid neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals or those with certain neuromuscular disorders. We will review your medical history to determine if you’re a suitable candidate.
Frequently Asked Questions: Dermal Filler
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable substances used to restore volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. Most fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that attracts and retains moisture.
How long do dermal fillers last?
The duration depends on the type of filler and the treatment area. Most hyaluronic acid fillers last 6–18 months+. This can vary greatly depending on an individuals metabolism, lifestyles, age, etc.
Is the treatment painful?
Most fillers contain a numbing agent (lidocaine) to reduce discomfort. Providers may also apply a topical numbing cream before the procedure to enhance comfort.
Are dermal fillers safe?
When administered by a qualified professional, dermal fillers are generally safe if you are a good candidate for the treatment. Side effects are typically mild and can include swelling, redness, or bruising. Rare complications, like vascular occlusion, require immediate medical attention. Ask your provider for more information.
What happens if I don’t like the results?
Most hyaluronic acid fillers can be reversed and dissolved. If you’re unhappy with the results, we can assess and provide a treatment plan for dissolving.
How soon will I see results?
Results are typically visible immediately after the treatment. However, some swelling or bruising may temporarily obscure the final outcome. Typically after 4-6 weeks you will see improved results, and some treatments improving further even after this time frame.
What is the recovery time?
Recovery is typically minimal. Most people resume normal activities immediately, although it’s advised to avoid intense exercise, heat, pressure to areas and direct sun exposure and alcohol consumption for 24–48 hours after treatment. Ask your provider for more information.
How do I prepare for a dermal filler appointment?
Avoid blood-thinning medications, supplements (like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E, etc., if able), and avoid alcohol consumption for at least 48 hours before the appointment to minimize bruising. Arrive to your appointment without any makeup on. Consider rescheduling your appointment if you have dental work (including cleanings), vaccinations, or if you are sick 2 weeks pre/post filler treatment. Speak to your provider for more information.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Common side effects include mild swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at the injection site. Rare complications include infection, allergic reactions, or vascular occlusion, which require prompt medical attention. Speak to your provider for more information.
Who is a good candidate for dermal fillers?
Intake will include a medical history review and an assessment of your anatomy to determine if you are a good candidate for filler.
Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals and those with certain medical conditions may need to postpone treatment.
